Changing Concept of Entertainment and New Entertainment Places in Istanbul in the 19th Century

Abstract

People in Ottoman daily life; they were living in a limited social environment such as home, mosque and market. With the emergence of social spaces such as coffee houses and taverns, communication between people has also become versatile. It is possible to say that in the Ottoman Empire, after the Tanzimat, it changed in many areas with the effect of westernization. Eating and drinking places, which are social spaces where the people spend a significant part of their time, also took their share from this change. During this period, some places disappeared completely with the effect of the Tanzimat, while others continued to exist by changing. In addition, new spaces in western style have emerged, unlike completely traditional spaces. This change in eating and drinking places is not only limited to the place, but also the understanding of entertainment in these places has changed. With this study, it is tried to shed light on the change in the places where the middle class people spend their social life. In addition, a comparison will be made between the period when these places were first opened and the period after the Tanzimat.
